Hello from the teacher

My name is Melanie and I am the Early Childhood Educator (or ECE) at the preschool. I have been a qualified ECE for over 25 years. I have worked in parent participation programs for many of those years including at the University of British Columbia and as a Mother Goose facilitator here on Salt Spring Island. As well I am the mother of two growing and changing sons. Working with preschool children is very rich and rewarding for me, and I enjoy working side by side with parents.

I am inspired by the wonderful physical environment that has been created here at the Salt Spring Co-Op for young children, and I deeply value the philosophy of learning through play. In my role as ECE, I strive to offer a variety of interesting and flexible equipment, materials, and opportunities for children to explore and experience. Through both what they are playing, and their social relationships I am able to support and extend their learning. It is a great privilege to be one of their first teachers.

Our preschool is a special place and so much of that comes from the unique talents and efforts of the parent group. It’s great to be a part of this special community!
